Science Matters is Radio Five’s weekly look at the world of science. Today there is an interview with Dr. Wang, an expert on dinosaurs.

Good morning, Dr. Wang. Thanks for coming to talk to us today. Firstly, what were dinosaurs?

Dinosaurs lived on Earth a long time ago. Some dinosaurs were huge and had long tails—they were bigger than a whole family of elephants. Others were very small—they were about the size of a chicken. Not all dinosaurs ate meat. Some just ate plants. Not all of them were dangerous. Some were homeless.

When did they live on earth?

Dinosaurs lived on Earth for about 135 million years. Man has lived here for only 35,000 years. About 65 million years ago, however, all dinosaurs died in a very short period of time. Nobody knows why it happened suddenly.

How do we know about dinosaurs?

Scientists study dinosaur bones and eggs to get information. They discover how dinosaurs lived, what they looked like, where they lived and what they ate. Scientists now believe that dinosaurs were very colorful animals.

Were they clever animals?

In the past, scientist thought that dinosaurs were slow and stupid. We now know that many dinosaurs were fast and powerful. Some were not only fast, but clever, too. They use the long claws on their feet to kill their food. Other dinosaurs were probably very stupid. One very large dinosaur had a brain the size of a peanut!

Do you think they could ever live on Earth again?

In the Hollywood film Jurassic Park, a scientist brings dinosaurs back to life from an old egg. Scientists in China recently found some dinosaur eggs similar to the one in the film. Could they bring dinosaurs back to life? It is unlikely, but in science, anything seems possible!

(   ) 42. Dinosaurs _________.

A. didn’t live in China         B. lived many years ago

C. are still living in China      D. lived under water

(   ) 43. Dinosaurs lived on Earth for about _________ years.                                        A. 3,000     B. 65 million    C. 135 million   D. 200 million

(   ) 45. In the past, scientists thought dinosaurs were _________ animals.                   A. slow and powerful   B. stupid and fast   C. huge and fast    D. slow and stupid

(   ) 46. Some large dinosaurs had very _________brains.                                     A. large     B. heavy       C. small        D. powerful.

Many young people can use the computer, but few of them know how to look after them. Remember the following when you use the computer.

l         Keep your computer in a cool, dry room. Too much or too little heat is bad for computers. Damp is also bad for them. Most computers work best at a temperature of 5-30 degrees centigrade.

l         Do not let people smoke cigarettes near your computer. Smoke of all kinds is very bad for many parts of a computer and can cause many problems.

l          Do not eat or drink when you are near your computer. Pieces of food and a little water in the keyboard can also cause many problems.

l         Make sure that the keyboard and the screen are the correct height for you. If they are not correct, you‘ll get backache.

l         Make sure the screen is the correct distance from your eyes. If you wear glasses, make sure these glasses are correct for using with the computer. Some people use a different pair of glasses when they use a computer.

l         Keep your screen clean and do not have it too bright. A dirty screen can hurt your eyes. A very bright screen can also be bad for your eyes. If you can afford one, buy a computer screen. It will be better for you than using the screen of a TV set.

I was born in New York, but I grew up in San Francisco. I began to live in London 25 years ago. If I am asked now where I want to live forever, I would say London. But I will always be American. San Francisco, like London, has many parks. Every day my sisters and I were taken to play in the parks as children. I didn’t go to school. I only had three hours of formal education when I was five. I was sent to school but came home at noon on the first day. I said I didn’t enjoy it and hadn’t learned anything. My parents decided that school was not for me and I never went back.

My mother then taught me and my two sisters, in the way of an English lady who had good education. We learned languages and read more than sciences and math. Sometimes she taught us herself, but we also had other teachers. They asked us to take lessons every day. About once a week we walked to Golden Gate Park. While we were walking, my mother taught me to read music. One day I noticed a little toy train in the window of a shop and I remember now how I’d like to have it. I couldn’t say my “r” when I was small. My mother said if I could say an “r” well, I would have the toy train. I usually get the things I want in life—but I work hard for them.

It can burn trees, houses, animals, or people. Sometimes big fires can burn forests. Nobody knows for sure how people began to use fire. 三、         听短文,判断正误,正确的选A;错误的选B。(共5分)

Jack was ten years old and he was a very lazy boy. He didn’t like doing any work. He had to go to school, of course, but he didn’t study hard there and tried to do little work. His father and mother were both doctors and they hoped that when he grew up their son would become a doctor too. But one day Jack said to his mother, “When I finished school, I want to be a cleaner.” “A cleaner?” his mother asked. She was very surprised, “That’s not a good job.” Why you do want to become a cleaner?” “Because I would only have to work one day a week.” Jack answered at once. “Only one day a week?” his mother said. “What do you mean? And how do you know it?” “Well,” Jack answered, “I know that the cleaner comes to work on Thursday every week, because I only see them on that day.” And then his mother laughed and said, “The cleaners go to work on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in other streets.”

四、         听短文, 根据所听内容,选择与文章意思一致的选项。(共5分)

I had a very unusual experience last Saturday. Grandma and I walked in to a restaurant and had our lunch. While we were sitting at table, we saw many people in the street. “What going on?’” grandma asked. “Let’s have a look,” I said. When we went over to the crowed, we noticed a very funny donkey walking across the road. We both watched the donkey. It stopped in the middle of the road, and stopped all the traffic. While we were worried, a policeman arrived. “Whose donkey is it?” “It’s mine.” A farmer said. “You must move your donkey.” The policeman said. Then the farmer pulled and the farmer pushed, but the donkey didn’t move. We all laughed. “Give him a carrot!” Grandma cried. “That’s a good idea.” The farmer said. When the donkey saw the carrot, he followed the farmer across the road.
